Abstract

This paper presents a focused study on a select group of prominent and eloquent non-Muslim poets who have contributed to the tradition of Naat poetry. Given the vast number of such contributors, the selection process was both demanding and discerning. Nonetheless, this work represents a step towards recognizing and appreciating this overlooked literary phenomenon. In the context of the Indian subcontinent, not only Hindus but adherents of various other faiths have enriched Urdu literature with a significant corpus of Naat poetry. There remains a strong need to explore, document, and promote this literary heritage to encourage interfaith harmony, mutual tolerance, patience, and peace. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a messenger of peace and compassion, reviving and reflecting upon his teachings necessitates creating inclusive intellectual and cultural pathways. In this regard, non-Muslim Naat poetry offers a unique and accessible medium for engaging broader audiences and conveying Islamic values to non-Muslim communities.
